Belly dancing, body builders and barbecued lamb

Cebu Foodie

I never really thought European chefs could make decent Middle eastern food, because in my experience, Europeans tend to go easy on the spices. The Sahara Nights dinner at Plantation Bay’s Galapagos Beach made me change my opinion somewhat.

Spiced out

Cebu Foodie

Dimsum Break's got a new product. It's a spicy version of their popular steamed fried rice, and I like it!

The original taste is still there, but made spicy by the addition of red bell peppers. An eight out of ten ought to do it, up by one point from the seven I'd give the regular version.

Cebu Foodie

I’m a sandwich freak. I love sandwiches of all kinds, whether it’s just a pan de sal sliced in half and slathered with Cheez Whiz, or a massive Club sandwich with turkey, bacon lettuce and tomato. It doesn’t really matter, as long as it satisfies my cravings.

You might say that a pan de sal with Cheez Whiz can’t really be satisfying, but try eating one of those when you don’t have anything else to eat at home, and you’ll see what I mean. And how can you not love its lack of pretense? A pan de sal with Cheez Whiz doesn’t purport to be anything else, surely, that should count for something.

Destination: Danao

In case you're on the way to Danao, and you're looking for a good restaurant, stop over at El Salvador Resort. They have a nice restaurant called Coco Cafe, and in my opinion, one of the best restos north of Cebu City.

Cuisine is unpretentious: Pinoy food make up the majority, and from what I've tasted, the cook knows pretty much what he's doing. I tried the sinigang na sugpo, lechon kawali and grilled tanguige, and everything was good. not spectacular, but wholesome and satisfying nonetheless.

Bayou bull

Cebu Foodie

There’s this diner in Crossroads called “Blue Zydeco Bayou” which people claim serves great Cajun-style food like jambalaya and gumbo. I wouldn’t know, I only went there for the sandwiches, because I'm a sandwich freak and I heard they serve submarine sandwiches. I found that the sandwiches, from the burgers to the po’ boy and muffuletta sandwiches, actually leave something to be desired.

Let’s do the burgers first: for a hundred and fifty bucks a pop, you get a bland burger patty, limp lettuce, a tomato slice and some pretty fucking soggy French fries. You need lots of ketchup just to get some flavor outta the burger. I didn’t try the cheeseburger, which costs almost two hundred Pesos. Obviously you get almost the same thing, the only difference being a slice of American cheddar, which I thought wasn't worth the extra fifty bucks you'd need to shell out. Truth be told, you’re probably better off getting a value meal at McDonald’s, Flame it, Burger Joint or Jollibee, and you even get a soda with your order, for the same price. A better deal, in my opinion, and loads tastier too.

The po’ boy, or poor boy sandwiches, come in different kinds, and cost something like two hundred bucks. I tried the roast pork po’ boy and it was pretty bland. I'd expected it to have a smoky hickory flavor, but it kind of fell pretty wide off the mark.

The Five Fs, or, Fantastic Food at Formo last February Fourteen

Cebu Foodie

A few years ago, I started hanging out at this bar in Banilad Town Centre called Formo.

I had the pleasure of meeting two of the owners, two very beautiful and gracious ladies who took the liberty of ordering for me some of the choice items on Formo’s menu.
